Secondary Glazing
Thornton Windows can supply and install 2 types of secondary glazing systems - Sliding secondary glazing and hinged and fixed secondary glazing.
All the different systems are available in a choice of white, brown or silver as standard but if so desired they can be manufactured in any of the RAL colours.
All the secondary units are glazed using a flexible P.V.C. gasket as standard.
Hinged and Fixed Secondry Glazing
This type of secondary is ideal for fixing over all draughty hardwood windows
Sliding Secondary Glazing
This type obviously does what it says it slides. There are two types of sliding secondary however - Vertical and horizontal. All the sliding secondary glazing units are sealed against draught and noise with a twin polypropylene weatherpile.
Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing
Vertical sliding secondary comes in two types - Guillotine shoot bolt for smaller windows and Spiral balanced for larger windows.
This type of secondary is best used when the window is taller than it is wide as it is operated by sliding one half of the unit over the other in an up and down movement.
This type of secondary glazing is ideal for listed buildings where sash windows are draughty and insulation is a problem. By installing secondary glazing to the inside of the window you create a vacuum similar to that of a double glazed unit. This then cuts down on noise, eliminates draughts and improves insulation by reducing the amount of heat lost through the window.
The type of mechanism used to operate the window as mentioned above is dependant on the size of the window.
Horizontal Sliding Secondary
This type of secondary operates by sliding from side to side in the similarly to a patio door.
This is a useful type of secondary glazing when a window is split into two vertically so that the bars of the sliding secondary can be positioned to imitate the design of the window. This type of secondary typically is wider than it is high. As with the previous mentioned vertical sliding version, the horizontal slider it has all the same spec with regards to sealing out the draughts etc.
